Second Round of Stabilization Dollars Latest Boost to Boston’s Aggressive Neighborhood Stabilization Track Record

Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced that the City’s Department of Neighborhood Development (DND) has been awarded $13.6 million in the second round of Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funding to assist the City’s ongoing foreclosure prevention and reclamation efforts. Specifically, the competitively awarded funding will allow the City to support responsible redevelopment of up to 275 foreclosed homes in those neighborhoods most burdened by Boston’s bank-owned properties, namely Dorchester, East Boston, Roxbury, Hyde Park, and Mattapan.

“This award accelerates our ability to impact the foreclosure challenges that we’re facing. We’re making important progress, but our neighborhoods are still in danger,” said Mayor Menino. “I want to thank Senators Kerry and Kirk, as well as Congressmen Capuano and Lynch for their continued support of Boston’s neighborhoods. And, in particular, I want acknowledge Congressman Frank for his tireless advocacy on the issue of foreclosure.”

Boston was one 482 total applicants requesting over $15 billion from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in foreclosure funding. Since passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) nearly one year ago, of which this foreclosure funding is part, the City has received close to $280 million in formula and competitive grants as well as bond allocations.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Officials from across the region gather to develop action plans

Today, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Kathleen Merrigan joined numerous mayors and more than one hundred, child hunger advocates, public health officials, and food security and policy leaders from across the Northeast in a call to action to end child hunger. Mayor Menino convened the meeting of mayors and policy leaders from nine states and Washington, D.C. to discuss strategies to increase child nutrition resources and create partnerships in the Northeast.

Mayor Menino called on Congress and the President to invest in Resources to End America’s Child Hunger (REACH) by 2015. He urged conference participants to reach across sectors to build partnerships between city leaders, community partners, and regional and national coalitions. He stressed the need for city, state and national leaders, especially in public health, school food, agriculture, and community food assistance programs, to work together with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make progress toward President Obama's goal of ending child hunger by 2015.

“We need to do a better job of ensuring that all of our kids have access to healthy foods,” Mayor Menino said. “For some of our kids, school lunch is the only meal they will get all day. This collaboration between Mayors will enable the entire region to share best practices and highlight innovative ways to strengthen child nutrition in schools, community programs, and at home.”
